Arrived Bilbao at 1230 after 4 hours by train through pretty countryside.
Settled into our hotel, The Miro Hotel down the road from the Guggenheim museum. This building ( Frank Gehry being the architect) has celebrated a decade of amazing success. It truly is a great structure which took us 3 hours, to view the 20th Century to the present day paintings & sculptures.
There wasn't much else in Bilbao but it was a much bigger place than we were expecting & we were pleased we took a night there. We light railed to the Sports Stadium where the old is being torn down & the new is being constructed partly on the same site without interrupting the soccer. This stadium is being built to hold a capacity of 55,000 & construction costs were estimated to cost E240 million! Now near completion this cost has been reduced & expected to cost E210 million. This is no doubt the opposite to what will happen with Barnett's new project?!
The hotel was great with complimentary coffee, tea, drinks & nibbles 24hours a day in their comfy lounge.
Went to reserve our seats for San Sebastián to find no trains only a bus to S/Sebastián at 0900
or 2000! There went another leg of the Eurail pass we had purchased back in Dec! Oh well...
Saturday
Left for San Sebastián at 0900.
Welcome to Bilbao.
The Guggenheim Museum.
